15 Holes & Lunch -

Ladies Christmas Open 2023
Another resounding success for the Pavenham Park Ladies Christmas Open - Merlyn (Lady Captain), her team, the full section of Ladies along with Zac, Lee, Marcus, Simon, and everyone at Pavenham Park Golf Club made the club proud again. The over-subscribed event (which filled within a week of opening), saw teams from as far afield as Muswell Hill & Finchley South Herts to more local teams from Woburn and Wellingborough. The overall winners this year were Juliet Parish and Denise Butler from Woburn Golf Club and The Pavenham home team winners were Heather Wildsmith and Julie Davies. The Captains Charity this year being the Samaritans saw contributions from the raffle and Ping Jacket auction raising well over £1,000. We cannot wait for our Christmas Open 2024.
A big, big thank you also goes to all of the background Crew - David, Bob, Ian, Graeme, Chris, Clare, Gareth (HO HO HO), Gwen, Jean, Jackie, Heather - all the ladies who donated raffle prizes, everyone who baked for the halfway house - everyone who supplied a tee box decoration, Jane for managing the Ping Jacket raffle. Without all of you and the support of Zac and his team, this event would not be the success it is. So well done everyone

A Blast from the past above - how many do you recognise. ?? Plus who remembers the competition?
We had a team enter an open at Northampton Golf Club recently and they came a very respectable 3rd, all playing a Florida Texas Scramble for the very 1st time. Well done ladies.
Lady Captains Away Day this year was at Rushden Golf Club -
The ladies all enjoyed the day with some better than expected weather - thanks to everyone for signing up.

Annual Captain vs. Vice Captain event - Some extreme competition as always in this event - saw Sandra's Vice Captains Team through as the winners. A lovely day - followed by lunch - committee agreed to use excess funds from the Ladies account to cover this lunch. All in All a very enjoyable day for everyone |

Pavenham Ladies On Tour - Helle's Belle's @ Hellidon Lakes Hotel & Golf Resort 2023
Helle"s Belle's
An amazing 3 days - golf, fun, food & laughter and maybe a glass too many sometimes....... Jane organised a great away weekend - we cannot thank her enough for all the hard work that was involved in getting 25 ladies all away at the same time, arranging teams, competitions, prizes - extra activities, bowling and so much more. Jane you were a true trooper - especially when they ladies got a bit noisy. A hilly course , hence buggies were required by a few. But buggies were not for the faint hearted here - up hill and down dale - with some steep inclines. A challenge indeed. Looking forward to where we go next year, hopefully another lady will take on the ambitious task of getting Pavenham Ladies out on tour - so here's to 2024 |
ELDERFLOWER TROPHY WINNER - JACKIE HUGHES WITH 36 POINTS.

PAVENHAM PARK LADIES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 24th & 25th JUNE 2023
Many thanks to all the ladies who entered our Championship weekend on what turned out to be one of the hottest so far this year. The course was in great condition and a close battle for the Gross Championship between 2 hot favourites - Anne Beckett & June Russell. Anne took a 2 shot lead on Saturday - but June came fighting back on Sunday with some red hot putting - enabling her to just pip Anne at the post to become the 2023 Gross Champion. The Nett was also a close finish - Anne leading the way with this on Saturday, unfortunately being pipped at the post on Sunday by Sue Long. Nearest the pin on Saturday was Elva. Nearest the pin in 2 on Sunday was Morag. Longest Drive on both days (well and just being plain greedy!!) was June. Many thanks to Zak, Lee, Victoria & Imogen & all of the team for treating the ladies to a memorable weekend, from the car parking (shame that a lot of the members on Sunday ignored the signs), cards ready, cold drinks on & off the course - Tee Announcements (it was like Augusta), and everyone who came up to support our championship. It did make us all feel very special.

Exchange day with the Bedfordshire

They thoroughly enjoyed playing our course, and were very impressed with the food and service as well as Gwen’s welcome and Zac’s hospitality.

A SPECIAL LADY'S BIRTHDAY
LINDA'S 80TH
Linda hosted a fantastic team roll-up and quiz along with a bit of a do for her 80th Birthday for us all to celebrate with her -
It was fabulous Linda and so lovely to see a few ladies who for one reason or another have not been able to play.
We all thank you for your generosity in including the Pavenham Ladies in your celebrations.

Dear Ladies It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that our friend Anne Puzey passed away on Thursday evening. She had been ill for 9 months. Anne had been a member of Pavenham Park Ladies section for many years - her infectious laugh and sense of humour will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her husband Alan and family at this very sad time. Elva |
LOCKDOWN TROPHY
Congratulations go to Kath & Elva on winning this years Lockdown Trophy.
Well done ladies.
Luca Thompson’s epic first round helped her take the 2022 Women’s County Champion of Champions title at Woodhall Spa, home of the National Golf Centre.
The Bedfordshire golfer opened with a stunning three under par round of 69 around the challenging Bracken Course before following it up with a second-round score of 79 to finish with a gross total of 148 (+4) and beat Suffolk’s Alice Barlow by two shots. Barlow finished six over par after posting rounds of 72 and 78, whilst Katy Yates of Essex also enjoyed a top three result ending the 36-hole event on eight over par. Girls’ County Champion of Champions winner Isabella Kent of Berkshire couldn’t quite match the heights of yesterday but produced another strong showing today as she rounded out her impressive weekend by finishing fourth. However, the day belonged to Thompson who never looked back after shooting a first-round score which featured four birdies and just one dropped shot. At the halfway stage, it was Thompson who led from Barlow by three shots. As play got underway for the afternoon, once again, it was the golfer from Berkshire who came out firing with two birdies in the first five holes. One more birdie followed at the tenth and despite a couple of bogeys down the stretch, Thompson was able to make a final round of 79. Barlow continued to apply the pressure and playing in the same group as Thompson, she knew what she needed to do. After a few double bogeys and dropped shots in the front nine, once they made the turn Barlow managed to rediscover some of her first-round form. |
CAPTAIN. vs. VICE CAPTAIN
The teams were picked at random. The gauntlet was thrown down, but alas our Lady Captain was not to win, and the Vice Captains Team were the winners on the day, and as quoted by the team, it was a whitewash!!

Thursday 18th August - Shield Match - PPGC v Bedfordshire - Home
Lost 4.5 - 2.5
Our Ladies team of Elva, Imogen, June, Louise, Chris & Clare with another shield debutant Julie, hosted against the Bedfordshire. As we had at last seen rain, the course played differently yet again. Congratulations go to Elva & Chris who won their matches, Imogen halved, which was great as she was giving 16 shots, with June's match being decided on the 18th giving her opponent a win by 1.
It is good to see that a lot more of our ladies are putting their names into the hat for the shield matches, a great way to play other courses and meet other golfers . Our next match is on 5th September.

Thursday 28th July - Shield Match - PPGC v Mount Pleasant - Away (Report by Louise Roberts)
Lost 5 - 2
Our ladies team of Elva, Kath C, Heather S, June, Linda together with Shield debutants Heather W and Louise travelled to Mount Pleasant golf course near Henlow for the latest Shield match. The course was new to some of us and has fairly recently been extended by 9 new holes created in an inland links style on what was agricultural land. It’s fair to say that the very dry conditions have severely affected the new part of the course. It was very difficult to navigate the fairways, which blended into the rough and one hole into another. Generally the undulating terrain, which even incorporated an old Pill Box on one hole, was not our friend! The older established part of the course was in better condition.
Kath and Heather S produced great wins which despite our best efforts in the difficult conditions could not be matched by the rest of our team. I know I still have a lot to learn about match play. Despite the disappointing outcome the Mount Pleasant ladies were very hospitable and provided good company. Sadly for them their course is set to be developed for housing and will close soon, so it seems we have played our last Shield match there.

Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Open 22nd July 2022 (Report from Louise Roberts)
One team from Pavenham Park lead by Di entered the Aspley Guise Open. Di was joined by Morag, Jackie Hughes and Louise who came off the subs bench to stand in for Denise. Starting on the tricky signature 10th our team came a commendable 3rd out of 26 teams entered from the surrounding counties. First to third were separated by only 3 points. Although the fairways were suffering because of the extreme weather, the tee boxes and slick greens were in great condition. The day was very well organised and the food was nice. Sadly we didn’t take any photos, but it was a great day out on a lovely course. We are looking forward to seeing Denise back soon and send her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thursday 14th July - Friendly Match - PPGC v Brampton Park - Away
Lost 1 1/2- 2 1/2
With cooler conditions and a welcome bit of cloud cover, PPGC ladies travelled to Brampton Park, Nr Huntingdon to play another friendly match.
What a great welcome we received from the lovely Brampton Park ladies.
Great to see some newcomers to our PPGC squad, with Heather W and Agnes joining Louise as our new recruits. Happy to report that Heather and Louise have now also signed up for a couple of Shield Matches; fantastic to have you on board.
Wow! What a Course! So many enhancements have been made to this track over the past couple of years. It’s not a Course to hit a driver and 3 wood on every hole; but more of a thinking golfer’s Course; very strategic, with some interesting pars 5,4 and 3. Lots of bunkers; water, bridges and an huge number of wild flowers which have been very sympathetically planted to compliment the Course enhancements.
Everyone seemed to have a very enjoyable day, despite losing the game, finished off with a very welcome Scampi and Chips as our after Match meal.
A good win by Louise and Jane, securing victory 5 and 4 from Brampton’s Lady Captain and her partner. Jackie and Sandra also won a valuable half on the 18th Green.
This is a fixture we hope to hold onto into the future and just a reminder to everyone that this is also a reciprocal Course for us at PPGC, so available to play for free on our Network cards.
If you haven’t played the Course recently; I would say it is definitely worth a visit!

Monday 11th July - Shield Match - PPGC v Aspley Guise - Away
Lost 4 1/2 - 21/2
Our ladies travelled to the beautiful Course at Aspley Guise on one of the hottest days of the season, so far.
Very dry conditions on the fairways made the ball bounce in some very strange directions!
The greens, however were in great condition and ran very true. I think a few of our ladies, me included, were giving the greens a bit too much Pavenham Park borrow!
The match was played in good spirits and despite the score was very close. Once again PPGC ladies had to give shots in 6 out of our 7 matches.
Great wins by Dawn, in her debut match (this time around) and Chris, with Morag coming in with a valuable half.
Jackie and Jane were very disappointed to lose their respective matches on the 18th green.

Tuesday 5th July - Friendly Pairs Match v Mowsbury - Home
Pavenham Ladies; Chris, Sandy, Pauline, Sue L, Judy, Elva, Louise, Jane B hosted our long term fixture with the Mowsbury ladies today.
The sun shone brightly as did our golf…. with Pavenham Ladies winning 3 -1.
Lovely to see Pauline back in the squad and securing a great win with Sandy; well done both!
The day was tinged with sadness for the Mowsbury ladies, as they also said farewell to their president of over 17 years and founder member - Brian Davis, who sadly passed away recently.
Despite this sad news, we received some lovely compliments from the Mowsbury ladies who said they had had a really happy time at PPGC.
Thanks to all for hosting your ladies and for playing so well

Thursday 30th June - Friendly Pairs Match v Buckingham- Away
Our ladies travelled to Buckingham for our friendly Match today; this was third time lucky, with the Match being rearranged 3 times because of the Covid years.
What a treat we were in for; great hospitality from the very friendly bar staff and the Course was in immaculate condition.
For those of you who haven’t played this lovely Course, it is well worth a visit. Some tricky holes caused the need for very strategic play.
It was great to have Louise as part of the squad, particularly with her strong performance on the front 9 (gross 44); Louise partnered me and it was hard for me to get a chance to putt; well done Lou! Big thanks also to Jane C for stepping in to play at the last minute.
Pavenham ladies; Anne B, Elva, June, Kath, Judy, Jane C, Louise and Jane B, managed to hold the home team to a 2 - 2 draw, which was no mean feat.

Our ladies put up a brave fight in quite blustery conditions, being pipped at the post by Cainhoe Wood 3-4.
Good wins by June Russell against Cainhoe’s top player Lecy Robinson 4 and 3 and Linda Darbon securing a good scalp 3 and 2. Halves for Chris Lawry and Jane Bonner against the recent County Seniors’ champions aged under 65 and over 65 players.
A very tight match, which could’ve gone either way. Thanks to everyone for giving your all, as always!
Next match 6th June v Dunstable Downs at home.

Shield Match Away v South Beds - Thursday 5th May
Pavenham Park ladies travelled to South Beds on a lovely sunny day, for our 2nd away match of the season.
The Course was in fabulous condition, but the greens were a little testing; having been kept quite long, but true, by the resident greenkeepers.
A great win for PPGC though 5-2, secured by a strong Team, with a good mix of handicaps.
Results as follows:-
June - Lost 5 and 4
Anne - Won 5 and 3
Morag- Won 1 up
Jane B - Won 7 and 5
Chris L - Won 3 and 2
Elva - Lost 8 and 6
Gwen - Won 4 and 3
Many congrats to Chris who remains undefeated from our first two Shield Matches
We are coming up to the Summer season now and we have quite a few Matches through July and August. With many Opens also taking place, we need to enlist the support of a few more ladies to help us out in our Shield Matches and Friendlies.
If you haven’t been involved before, please do ‘take the plunge’ and ‘have a go’. It is a great chance to meet ladies from other Clubs and play on some beautiful Courses across the County for the cost of a bacon bap and coffee!
If you have played in Shield Matches before, please, please sign up and help us out. As was shown at South Beds, if we have a good mix of handicaps, we stand a really good chance of winning. Remember Pavenham Park handicaps travel well; even with the new handicap system!
It would be fabulous if we can win the Trophy back.. and would be great to have as many ladies as possible contributing to that success!
